Rothwell Grange

Self has designed all new house-types for a showcase development in Rotherham which aims to provide affordable homes for young people, families and older people.

We were appointed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in May to provide concept designs for the former Rothwell Grange care home site on Broom Valley Road. Rothwell Grange is a key strategic development site within the council’s Shared Ownership and Affordable Housing Programme (SOAHP) grant allocation and the showcase project has also attracted monies from other government funding streams.

The multimillion-pound scheme will deliver 42 homes suitable for a range of households. These include 20, two-bed apartments and eight one-bed apartments along with eight, two-bed maisonettes and six, two-bedroomed bungalows. All ground floor apartments have small gardens and residents in the upper-floor dwellings will have generous balconies.

Half the properties will be sold on a shared ownership basis and the remaining 50% will be retained by Rotherham Council as rental properties. Self Director Mark Barker said:

“We were delighted to be appointed to provide concept designs for this project to deliver much-needed affordable housing.

Faced with a challenging, sloping site, we have produced all new house-types for the scheme which we hope meets the council’s aspiration to deliver a high quality, financially viable, exemplar housing scheme that genuinely enhances the local street scene, environment, open space and local amenities.”

The designs were central to a public consultation event earlier this month and a planning application has now been submitted with a decision expected in December.

The Rothwell Grange development is the latest example of Self’s track record in partnering with local authorities to deliver social housing and community development projects. It also adds to a growing portfolio of leisure, housing and commercial schemes we have delivered in Rotherham which is helping to transform the fortunes of one of the top 20 growth towns in the country.
