Completion of Trio of Social Housing Schemes Designed by Self Architects

Three social housing projects, designed by Self Architects and White Design, have been completed providing nearly 50 new homes in West Yorkshire.

We designed a range of two and three-bedroomed houses for client WDH which are being offered for rent or sale on a shared ownership basis.

Building contractors have just finished 22 new homes on the site of WDH’s former depot at Austin Road in Airedale. The development is a mixture of three-bedroom homes (pictured below) and two-bedroom flexible bungalows, all for affordable rent.

The innovative bungalow designs allow living on one floor with an additional bedroom and bathroom on the upper floor, to support flexible living if needed.

Self and White Design also designed 16 two-storey, semi-detached properties with gardens and parking on the site of a former independent living development on Sparable Lane (pictured below) and Sugar Lane, Wakefield.

A further eight, two-bedroomed shared ownership houses have also been completed for WDH on Kirkham Avenue, Kirkhamgate.

Director Martyn Smith said: “We have a long-standing and much valued relationship with WDH and are delighted to be designing new, sustainable homes to cater for the local housing need in Yorkshire.

“As a practice we have a track record of working in conjunction with local authorities and social housing providers like WDH to deliver modern and flexible designs which meet a real and growing need.”

WDH has so far invested around £170 million on building or buying 1,500 new homes and is currently developing 220 new homes under the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

Andy Wallhead, WDH’s Investment Director said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer these quality new homes as part of our expanding homes profile.

“Demand for all homes remains high but we have seen a significant increase in the number of people wanting new, efficient properties.  We are pleased to be able to deliver this kind of product in these high demand areas.”

Self and White Design have designed a further development of 14, two-bedroomed flexible bungalows for rent at Springfields, Wakefield, which should be complete by the end of June. Work has also started on a further scheme for WDH of 16 two, three and four-bedroomed homes for shared ownership due for completion in December.
