Architectural Assistant Wins University Award

Self are delighted that Architectural Assistant Alex Broadbent recently won the prestigious ‘Ibstock – Best Urban Intervention’ award for his master’s degree main project.

Alex, who studies at Sheffield Hallam University, proposed a new adaptable and publicly accessible Trader’s Market for the North East town of North Shields. Situated on the Quayside, where the current Fish Market and Herring sheds stand, the initiative aims to re-connect the community with the historic context of the area.

Through re-activating the key streets and space around the market, the project will generate a platform for small business owners, local craftsmen and artists to trade. The new structure will also accommodate space for these crafts people to produce their work, which through the collaboration of key members of recognised organisations in the community, will form relationships and links, creating a thriving interdependent community.

An integral component to the concept of the project is the adaptability of the Fish Market, ensuring the already established fishing industry continues to prosper, providing the relevant agents with better facilities.
