Project: Offices, Warehouse and Treatment Plant
Location: Dinnington, Sheffield
Client: Safety-kleen UK Ltd
Safety-kleen sells a range of solvents and cleaning materials used largely in the automotive industry. It operates a service of collecting, treating and recycling used solvents. It decided to concentrate its north of England operations on a six acre site in Dinnington, Sheffield.
The brief called for separate offices and amenity building, warehouse, treatment, tanker offloading and vehicle servicing buildings. Together with complicated pipework, pumping and tank storage facilities, the project cost was £6 Million.
The architectural problem was to co-ordinate the variety of buildings into a common theme. We used a variety of materials to group the buildings and allow them to be prominent against the web of pipework and tanks.
Red horizontal cladding and flashings were chosen to emphasise parts of the buildings and contrast with olive green vertical cladding used for the process buildings. Rough artificial stone with smooth stone quoins provided a common theme linking office areas and the site entrance.
