Plans have been submitted for a new industrial starter unit development in County Durham aimed at providing a further jobs and skills boost to the local economy.

The scheme on Consett Business Park has been designed by Self on behalf of commercial property specialists Priority Space. It will deliver 13 industrial starter units to buy or let, ranging in size from 110 to 234 sq metres, aimed primarily at supporting new and grow-on business use.

Mark Barker, Director at Self said:

“This scheme provides much-needed additional employment space to promote new businesses, supporting the continued regeneration of the local economy and helping to grow small to medium enterprises. The single-storey buildings are of a high architectural quality and the design will involve planting a number of new trees and shrubs as well as improvements to existing landscape features.”

The development would be another building block in the continued regeneration of Consett which was devastated by the decline of mining and closure of the town’s Steel Works in 1980. Since then, more than 6,000 jobs have been created - mainly through the Genesis Project - and today more than 200 different companies operate in and around the town with employment rates above the county average. However, there remains a need to boost local skills and support local business start-ups and growth.

Priority Space has a track record of creating high-quality, sustainable commercial space focused at the SME sector. Director Lee Buchanan said:

“The development in Consett will support local jobs and businesses, whilst at the same time providing opportunities for businesses to purchase their own workspace. The new industrial units will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the town, local area, businesses and services, increasing activity, investment and employment.”
